Vietnam – a land of rich history, stunning landscapes, and a tapestry of cultures waiting to be unraveled. Amidst its diverse offerings, the city of Hanoi stands as a treasure trove often overshadowed by its more famous counterparts. This is the tale of my five-day journey through the vibrant streets of Hanoi, the awe-inspiring beauty of Halong Bay, and the soul-stirring landscapes of North Vietnam.
Hanoi, the bustling capital of Vietnam, often finds itself in the shadows of its more famous counterparts like Ho Chi Minh City and the majestic landscapes of Halong Bay. Yet, those who venture to this vibrant city quickly realize that Hanoi is an underrated gem that holds its unique charm and allure. Its historical richness, cultural diversity, and lively street life combine to create an experience that is both captivating and authentic.
Though there are plenty of airlines operating from India to Vietnam due to its popularity these days, the airfares are increasing and layovers are pretty usual. Luckily, we got a direct flight to Hanoi and it was pretty comfortable. Hanoi is a less explored gem so we thought of ditching Ho Chi Minh City and planned to explore this beautiful northern part of Vietnam. The historic Old Quarter, known for its narrow streets and traditional houses, contrasts with the contemporary boutiques and art galleries that have sprung up in recent years. This proximity creates a dynamic energy that infuses every corner of the city.
One of the city’s greatest charms lies in its lively street life. The narrow alleys of the Old Quarter are alive with activity, from street vendors selling fragrant pho to artisans crafting intricate souvenirs. The vibrant markets offer a sensory feast, with colorful displays of fruits, vegetables, and exotic spices. At night, the streets transform into open-air eateries and pop-up bars, offering a taste of Hanoi’s famed street food culture. The city has much to offer and exceeds expectations in terms of food, culture, history, and Infrastructure. It’s the corporate city of Vietnam yet it provides all that tourists are looking for.
Vietnam’s cuisine is famed for its flavors and variety, but for vegetarians like me, it posed a slight challenge. Most of the restaurants and local eateries serve bizarre non-vegetarian food including frog soup and pork pho but Hanoi is quite diverse in terms of culture and you don’t face a big challenge finding a vegetarian restaurant especially if you’re an Indian. Indians are everywhere…!!!
There are many Indian restaurants in and around Old Quarter and they serve good vegetarian food. However, determination and preparation paved the way. Armed with an arsenal of cup noodles and canned foods, I embarked on a culinary adventure through Hanoi’s food stalls and markets. Even though I couldn’t indulge in the famed pho, I discovered an array of delightful vegetarian dishes, from banh mi loaded with fresh vegetables to delicious spring rolls.
While Hanoi’s street food culture leans heavily towards meat-based dishes, I was pleasantly surprised to find that hidden vegetarian gems were waiting to be discovered. Street food vendors were often willing to modify dishes to accommodate vegetarian preferences. For example, the beloved banh mi sandwich, traditionally filled with various types of meat, can easily be customized with fresh vegetables, tofu, or egg-based options.
In my quest to embrace Hanoi’s culinary scene as a vegetarian, I discovered that leaving no craving unfulfilled was entirely possible. From satisfying my love for noodles with vegetarian versions of bun cha and bun thang to indulging in the savory delights of banh xeo pancakes, Hanoi’s food scene had a solution for every palate.
Vietnam’s landscape is a canvas painted with a myriad of natural wonders, but none quite as breathtaking as the ethereal beauty of Halong Bay. As our journey through this stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site unfolded, it became evident that Halong Bay was not just a destination – it was a majestic highlight that would forever be etched in our memories. Our adventure began as we booked our tour to Halong Bay from the local operator in Old Quarter who took 80$ from us for a couple.
The next morning, we boarded the tour bus that took us to the Hanoi port where our cruise was waiting. We set sail into the calm waters of Halong Bay, a seascape characterized by its emerald green waters and the iconic limestone karsts that rise dramatically from the sea. Each karst seemed like a sentinel, a silent guardian that held ancient secrets within its rugged embrace. The breeze carried a sense of anticipation, as we eagerly awaited the wonders that lay ahead. As we were sailing through the calm waters, we happened to cross the Majestic location where the Pirates of the Caribbean series was shot.
Each karst seemed like a sentinel, a silent guardian that held ancient secrets within its rugged embrace. The breeze carried a sense of anticipation, as we eagerly awaited the wonders that lay ahead. The cruise did not rush and took us through all the scenic zones including the Halong Mountains where we enjoyed kayaking in the calm waters of the ocean as part of our complimentary package.
One of the most captivating aspects of Halong Bay is the presence of floating fishing villages that dot the waters. As we glided past these villages, we caught glimpses of daily life on the water – fishermen tending to their nets, children playing on makeshift rafts, and houses built on stilts that seemed to defy gravity. The juxtaposition of the traditional lifestyle against the backdrop of the towering karsts was a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
As our time in Halong Bay drew to a close, we knew that we were leaving footprints on the shores of a place that had left an indelible mark on our hearts. The memories of kayaking through hidden coves, exploring mystical caves, and gazing in awe at the towering karsts will forever be a part of our story. Halong Bay offered us a glimpse of nature’s artistry at its finest, a masterpiece woven from earth, water, and time. The food was a big challenge while we were on the cruise as they only had rice and salad as the vegetarian options in their menu but we were so distracted by the beauty that we survived on fruits and did not feel much of a problem about it.
While the allure of the north is often overshadowed by the popular destinations of the south, it’s the hidden gems that often hold the most profound beauty. Tam Coc Ninh Binh’s iconic rice fields, surrounded by limestone peaks, took my breath away. Embarking on a boat ride through these natural wonders was like sailing through a painting, with each stroke of the oar revealing a new perspective of the mesmerizing scenery.
One of the most captivating ways to experience Tam Coc Ninh Binh is by embarking on a boat journey along the Ngo Dong River. The journey through the winding waterways takes you through a natural gallery of limestone peaks and lush greenery. The rhythmic rowing of the oars and the gentle lapping of the water against the boat create a symphony of serenity that envelops you in a meditative trance.
The journey through the rice fields of Tam Coc Ninh Binh is best experienced from the vantage point of a small boat. Drifting along the peaceful waterways, I was surrounded by towering limestone karsts that seemed to emerge from the depths, their reflections rippling on the tranquil surface. Each paddle stroke carried me through hidden caves and beneath lush foliage, unveiling a world untouched by time.
As I navigated the waterways, I caught glimpses of the dedicated rice farmers who cultivate these fields with unwavering devotion. Their tireless efforts shape the landscape, and their resilience is a testament to the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature. Their labor is a reminder that the beauty of Tam Coc Ninh Binh is not merely a visual spectacle; it’s a result of generations of care and cultivation.
One of the most liberating aspects of my journey was the scooter rental provided by the hotel. Armed with a map and a sense of adventure, I set out to explore every nook and cranny of Vietnam. The scooter became my companion as I ventured through bustling markets, serene temples, and the quiet lanes that hid Hanoi’s most charming secrets. The experience of navigating the streets like a local added an element of authenticity to my journey.
Vietnam’s culinary scene extends beyond its traditional dishes. Bia hoi, the locally brewed draft beer, was a refreshing way to unwind after a day of exploration. And then there’s the coffee – oh, the coffee! Vietnam’s coffee culture is renowned, and the rich, aromatic brews served over ice or blended into delectable drinks became a daily ritual. It was here that I realized coffee could be an experience rather than just a beverage.
As my journey drew to a close, I couldn’t resist the urge to bring home a piece of Vietnam. My suitcase was laden with bags of Vietnamese coffee and an assortment of chips, each flavor a memory of a different place and a different moment. These tokens became more than just souvenirs; they were reminders of the vibrant streets, the mesmerizing landscapes, and the hospitable people that had made my trip truly extraordinary.
Vietnam’s people are its true gems. Their warmth, hospitality, and genuine smiles made me feel at home in a foreign land. From the friendly street vendors who patiently taught me a few words in Vietnamese to the locals who offered directions with a smile, it was the people of Vietnam who turned my journey into an unforgettable experience.
Choosing the right location for our stay added another layer of vibrancy to our trip. We opted to stay in the Old Quarter of Hanoi, a neighborhood that pulsated with energy day and night. The narrow streets were a bustling tapestry of street food stalls, souvenir shops, and vibrant markets. Every corner held a story waiting to be discovered, and the vibrant atmosphere made our trip all the more memorable.
As I look back on my five days in Vietnam, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences that unfolded. Hanoi, with its underrated charm, captivated me with its blend of history and modernity. From navigating the bustling streets on a scooter to savoring the flavors of the local cuisine, each moment etched itself into my memory.
Vietnam’s north offered a canvas of unparalleled beauty, from the breathtaking Halong Bay to the rice fields of Tam Coc Ninh Binh. The genuine hospitality of the people, the thrill of exploration on two wheels, and the joy of sipping coffee by the roadside – these are the snapshots that define my journey through Vietnam. It’s a land where the underrated becomes unforgettable, where every corner holds a treasure waiting to be discovered, and where the spirit of adventure leads to the most cherished memories.
