Baku. It was in December of 2022 and the festive season was upon us, and we found ourselves in Dubai. We went on a vacation for a week there and wanted to spend our New Year in Dubai. While the idea of ringing in the New Year amidst the glitz and glam of Dubai was tempting, the skyrocketing prices during peak season sent us scrambling for alternatives. We realized that we’d bruise our bank accounts if we stayed in Dubai till the new year and that’s when Azerbaijan popped up on our radar, a name that sparked curiosity and a sense of excitement.
We were already planning this trip late, so we started looking for cheap flights on Skyscanner. Luckily, we found a good deal and booked our tickets. Next up was Visa.
The visa process for Azerbaijan turned out to be a breeze. Gone were the days of long queues and complicated paperwork. With just a few clicks, scanned documents, and a short wait (3 working days!), our visas were secured online. Also, if you are an Indian passport holder with a UAE resident permit or holding a US, UK, or Schengen Visa, then it’s a VOA (Visa on Arrival) for you in Azerbaijan. Apply for a visa on their official website here and check all the information before your travel as it keeps changing.
Now we had our main stuff ready after our tickets were booked and a Visa in hand.
Our journey to Baku began with a quick bus ride from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, where our flight awaited. Tickets from Dubai were expensive so we chose a low-cost airline “WizzAir” which operates from Abu Dhabi. We left Dubai during the rush hour and took the metro to Al Ghubaiba metro station. There are hourly buses that operate from Dubai to Abu Dhabi for just 25 Dhs. A cab is also an option if you’re too impatient and appreciate traveling privately. Well! we did not face any issues with the bus and it was way too clean than our imagination.
We boarded it around 6:30 in the evening and clocked in Abu Dhabi in 90 minutes. The dedicated stop was the Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station. We took our luggage and headed towards the Mall just opposite the bus station to fill our bellies. Unfortunately, our first hiccup arrived in the form of a famished belly. The food court at the Abu Dhabi Central Mall, to our dismay, offered no vegetarian options. It was 8:30 in the night and we were starving. Thankfully, a lone pizza outlet saved the day, even if it wasn’t exactly a culinary masterpiece.
After a not-so-tempting meal, we headed towards the bus station again to take a bus to Abu Dhabi International Airport. Another hurdle emerged – our trusty Dubai NOL card turned out to be useless in Abu Dhabi. Since all the Emirates in UAE have their own governing body and rules, the same taxi app or public transport card that we used in Dubai was invalid in Abu Dhabi.
We purchased a new “Hafilat” card and a quick recharge later, we finally boarded the bus to the airport after a 30-minute wait.
Stepping into the Abu Dhabi International Airport was like entering a scene straight out of a sci-fi movie. The sleek architecture, the automated systems, and the overall futuristic vibe left us awestruck.
Immigration was a breeze, and soon we were settling into our seats for the pre-dawn flight to Baku. Our flight was at 2 in the morning so we found a cozy corner next to our departure gate. We took a brief nap on the flight and as the brightness unfolded with the dawn, the views were breathtaking. We were too tired to appreciate this view but cherished this beauty vividly.
As the sun peeked over the horizon, we touched down in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Immigration formalities were swift, but the language barrier presented a slight challenge. We had pre-booked a hotel (Ramada by Wyndham Baku), but upon exiting the relatively small airport, the taxi driver charged a hefty sum for the ride. With exhaustion setting in and limited options, we had no choice but to agree.
On the way to the hotel, which was located near the Caspian Sea, our driver stopped at a convenience store where we snagged a much-needed SIM card. As we entered the city, a wave of awe washed over us. Baku unfurled before our eyes, a captivating blend of modern sophistication and old-world European charm. Despite the December chill, the beauty of the city was undeniable.
After a one-hour drive, we reached the hotel. But the wait for our room, due to the holiday rush, turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The reception staff informed us that our room was not quite ready, but the breathtaking view from the hotel lobby was enough to keep us occupied. The sight of the Caspian Sea, glistening in the morning sun, was absolutely mesmerizing.
Ramada by Wyndham Baku was an old style architecture which was evident from its rustic doors and old-school designs. Our room was sea-facing with a cozy balcony that blew our minds at first glance. We kept our luggage aside and kept admiring the view for hours.
Exhausted from our overnight journey, we decided to skip venturing out that day. The hotel room itself offered a slice of paradise, with its stunning balcony view of the Caspian Sea. Room service came to the rescue, and we indulged in a delicious lunch – vegetarian Pizza, Sandwiches, cappuccino, and perfectly blended Iced Tea.
The next day, Baku was ready to be explored. Our initial trepidation about the language barrier quickly vanished. The locals, despite the communication gap, exuded warmth and hospitality. The city itself was a captivating blend of old European charm and modern marvels. The views, wherever we turned, were simply breathtaking.
As dusk descended, the city transformed. Christmas decorations shimmered, bathing Baku in a warm, festive glow. Nizami Street, the city’s vibrant heart, stole the show. We had never witnessed such a dazzling display of lights, decorations, and festive cheer. The energy was electric, and the sight of bundled-up locals, adorable children, and fashionable crowds filled us with a sense of wonder.
Nizami Street’s night market was a haven for foodies, with an aroma of delicious street food wafting through the air. While meat dishes dominated the scene, we managed to find vegetarian options that tantalized our taste buds, especially the amazing noodles. The street was also lined with restaurants helmed by renowned Azerbaijani chefs, offering a glimpse into the country’s culinary heritage.
We continued our exploration of Nizami Street. Armed with Google Translate as our trusty sidekick, we navigated menus and communicated with vendors. Despite the language barrier, the experience was filled with laughter and warmth. We snapped countless photos, capturing the vibrant energy of the street and the festive spirit that filled the air.
Our quest for a unique experience led us to Papaq Lounge, a hidden gem nestled on Nizami Street. This wasn’t your ordinary bar; it was a historical landmark reimagined. Built from a World War II bunker, the lounge oozed character with its exposed brick walls, paintings, and flags representing countries that participated in the war. The vibe was electric, with locals and tourists alike enjoying games, drinks, and lively conversation.
We ordered an orange hookah, a traditional way to enjoy tobacco mixed with flavored water. The staff went above and beyond, surprising us with complimentary baklava, lemon tea, and a sweet treat. The atmosphere was a captivating blend of history, culture, and modern fun.
Baku cast a spell on us, and Nizami Street became our daily haunt. Almost every day of our stay, we found ourselves drawn back to its vibrant embrace. The street was a constant source of entertainment, with street performers, musicians, and bustling shops offering everything from souvenirs to traditional clothing. The Caspian Sea breeze, cool and invigorating, added a refreshing touch to our daily walks.
Our choice of hotel, Ramada by Wyndham Baku, turned out to be a haven of relaxation. The hotel boasted a private beach, offering the perfect escape from the city’s energy. Sitting on the beach, listening to the gentle waves lap against the shore, and feeling the cool Caspian Sea breeze caress our skin became a daily ritual. The view of the endless blue horizon, stretching towards the setting sun, was a picture of tranquility.
Our decision to spend Christmas in Baku couldn’t have been more perfect. The festive decorations, the warm hospitality of the locals, and the overall atmosphere of joy and celebration made it a truly unforgettable experience. We felt a sense of accomplishment, having discovered a hidden gem of a city that offered a unique blend of history, culture, and modern excitement.
As our time in Baku drew to a close, we bid farewell to the city with a heavy heart. We carried with us unforgettable memories – the breathtaking views, the delicious food, the friendly locals, and the captivating energy of Nizami Street. Baku had exceeded our expectations, transforming from a last-minute alternative into a cherished travel destination.
